Wyalusing State Park Embraces QR Codes

Wyalusing State Park, in southwest Wisconsin, has over 21 miles of trails. Located along the bluffs of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers, the trails offer a variety of sights as well as very different levels of terrain.

For the first time visitor, choosing which trail offers scenic views or which trail has steep grades or steps, can be a daunting task. A paper map shows the trail layout. Most trails have a brief description. Asking a park ranger or the park staff at the visitor station is always an option, but sometimes a visitor may forget to ask.

Wyalusing State Park began to utilize QR codes in 2011. These square-shaped black-and-white codes are found in the Park Visitor Guide and the concession stand. The Wyalusing QR codes are used to show users the latest trail information, topographical maps, nature information, and short videos of trail and natural features. Each trail has a specific topographical map. The six mile canoe trail has several sections of maps.

A QR code is a picture that a web enabled cell phone can translate into a web address. There are a number of different ways to read QR codes. The easiest is to take a web enabled cell phone, sometimes called a smartphone, and use a QR code reader app, which can scan any code and immediately launch the content in a web browser. Most smartphones have a QR Code reader App. You just need to find it. Users just point a smartphone's camera at the QR code, and in a moment (if there's cellphone coverage) the phone will access current trail information or anything relevant to using that particular trail. Web enabled tablets can also scan QR codes.

When smartphones scan the QR code for Wyalusing State Park, the wireless device will go to a special website formatted for the smartphone or a tablet. Once the information is on the wireless device, the web address is stored on the device. The QR code does not have to be scanned again for that device.

If your wireless device doesn’t have one already, the first thing you’ll need to do is download a FREE QR code reader to your mobile device.
If you have an Apple device visit the app store and download my favorite reader, QR Reader for iPhone.

If you have an Android device, visit the Android market and download QR Droid.

If you have a Blackberry device, you’re in luck! Many BB’s already come with QR code readers. Located the MENU key on your device and select SCAN A BARCODE. If your Blackberry doesn’t have a scanner, visit the app store and download QR Code Scanner Pro.

Wyalusing State Park by Video

Wyalusing State Park is located in southwest Wisconsin along the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. Here, one can hike and camp 500 feet above the Wisconsin River on the Wisconsin Ridge campground. A park visitor can also picnic high above the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. Extend your stay and experience the canoe trail in the back waters of the Mississippi River as well as the banks of the "Big Muddy".

The videos below show the visitor just a bit of what to expect. But, as the saying goes, "You really should have been here!"

Explore Wyalusing State Park*

People of all ages have a great time at Wyalusing State Park located in the Driftless area of the southwest corner of Wisconsin. Activities abound, whether walking on the trails, birding, photography, canoeing, fishing, biking, or camping.

Even with all of these activities, sometimes parents hear,“I'm bored. There's nothing to do here.” Even though Wyalusing State Park has abundant flora and fauna, you just can't seem to get them interested in their surroundings.

Make tracks to the Park Visitor Center and ask for a Wisconsin Explorer booklet. Make tracks to the Park Visitor Center and ask for a Wisconsin Explorer booklet. Booklets are available for kids 3-5, 6-8, and 9 and up. The program is designed for individual children visiting state properties with family members or adult friends.

Each Wisconsin Explorer booklet is filled with games, scavenger hunts, hikes, and crafts to help you explore Wisconsin’s great outdoors together during your stay in the park. It also shares interesting facts and information about the park. Parents can help their kids complete the required activities and earn any one of the three different badges: a Sugar Maple State Tree patch for ages 3-5 (Link), a Red Granite State Rock patch for ages 6-8 (Link), or a Trilobite Patch for ages 9 and up (Link).

The Wisconsin Explorer program is designed to provide participants with the flexibility to see and interact with the park at their own pace and within the limits of their own time. By presenting information to kids in a fun and interactive manner, the Wisconsin Explorer program enhances their understanding and appreciation of the bounties of nature and their State Park, encouraging them to help protect and preserve them.

The goal of the Wisconsin Explorer program is to Educate, Entertain, and Inspire. The staff at Wyalusing State Park and the Friends of Wyalusing State Park wants to educate you about fun opportunities to get outside and learn about the natural resources available in Wisconsin State Parks. And, we want to inspire you to become more involved in State Parks and the outdoor world.

At the end of their visit, kids can go to the visitor center to show their completed booklet to the Ranger. They are then sworn in as Junior Rangers and receive an official Junior Rangers certificate and badge or patch. This ceremony instills a sense of achievement, pride and responsibility in your little one, not to mention provides a perfect photo opportunity for proud parents!

A Good Book and a Warm Fire

Wyalusing History; the Park, the People, the Land, was 24 years in the making. Paul Kosir's book, can be yours just by traveling to Wyalusing State Park Visitor Center.

Paul Kosir served as the park naturalist from the late 1970's through the early 1990's. During Kosir's tenure, he guided park visitors around the trails, provided interpretive talks, as well as portrayed "characters" who brought the park's beauty to others.

In the second edition of Wyalusing History, the Park, the People, the Land, last published in 2004, Paul Kosir takes the reader through the park with the same skill he used as a naturalist, this time, however, through the use of the written word. Photographs provided by park archives as well as people who resided within the boundaries, provide interesting perspective as the reader is travels through periods of history.

Kosir's vivid descriptions of trails, no longer marked on the Park's maps, will bring back memories of those who have walked on the same trails of the Native American, or immigrants traveling to their new home in the west. His story of Big Sand Cave will provide a mixture of humor as well as tragedy. Some may call the moral of the story "just desserts".

Paul Kosir's Wyalusing State Park is the same park as it was in the past and as it will be in the future. Memories created today may have been the same memories of long ago: young visitors gazing across the valley at Point Lookout, sharing secret words, ending with "I do"; senior citizens, looking up at the flood record sign at the boat landing, reminiscing about the big flood of the '50s; and treasure hunters, equipped with the latest electronic gadgetry, crawling to the back of Treasure Cave in search of long lost treasures.

For some readers, Paul Kosir's book will serve as a reference as he describes the miles of discovered and rediscovered trails. Still, others, will find Kosir's story of the people who called the lands of the park an interesting read.

Stop in the Park Office. Buy yourself a copy of the book, and while you are visiting, pick up a copy for a friend. All profits are returned to the Friends of Wyalusing State Park.

Friends of Wyalusing State Park Endowment Fund

On May 21, 2009, The Friends of Wyalusing State Park was the very first Wisconsin State Park Friends' group in the state to start an endowment fund.

The endowment fund was to become a perpetual source of financial assistance to support recreation, education and environmental stewardship of Wyalusing State Park. The interest generated from the fund will directly benefit our work with the park and will help to create a more enjoyable experience for visitors as well as protecting the beautiful natural resources that can be found within the park.

An endowment fund is a large savings and investment fund managed by professional financial services, provided by The Natural Resources Foundation (NRF).

The endowment fund started with a a "small acorn" of $1000 which was provided by the Friends of Wyalusing though the profits of the Friends operated Concession Stand as well as individual donations. We were required to "grow" the fund by $1,0000 per year. When $10,000 was reached The Friends would receive a percentage of the interest on the account every year. Today, only two years later, the endowment fund has exceeded the $10,000 goal.

The more we get into the fund, the more interest The Friends will have to use for the benefit of the park.

Building #1724 Gets a New Name
Something NEW at Wyalusing State Park

The Park Office, the naturalist's office, the Old Park Office, and "that small empty building" are all the same - Building #1724. The Department of Natural Resources have designated all state park buildings with a number.

It was built by the Works Progress Administration in 1939 (Link) The building served as the Wyalusing Sate Park Office from 1939 -1998. How many of our readers remember driving up to the building, and registering for a campsite?

A new Park Visitor Center was constructed in 1998. Building #1724 was used as an office for the Park Naturalist until c.a.2004. The building remained vacant from 2004-2010.

In 2010, the Friends of Wyalusing State Park began to provide funds for the repurposing of the “Old Park Office”. Donations, grants, and Park Concession Stand profits were used to transform the building into an accessible interpretive center. It will also be used as a meeting place for small groups. The building received insulation, updated electrical wiring, an accessible entrance, and tuck-pointing of stones. The new wood paneling came from the trees in the park. The flooring was sanded and finished. (The interior of the building is featured with a 3d view movie clip in this blog)

The Friends of Wyalusing State Park, along with Park administration, began working to rename this building a little before 2010. As it turns out, this is not as simple as, “Let’s rename the building……” There are forms to be filled out, and mailed, research needs to be completed, and all of this needs to be approved. Finally, a new name for the building has been determined. It is….. Nope, can’t tell you, yet! That will be in the next blog. But, if you had attended the Friends of Wyalusing State Park meetings, you would know. Hopefully we can keep a secret.

But, what The Friends of Wyalusing State Park can announce is that there will be two new informational signs for the kiosk located just east of building #1724. The signs were funded by the Friends of Wyalusing.

The Civilian Conservation Corps built the kiosk. Originally, it was placed at the entrance to the Point Lookout parking lot. It was used to greet visitors to Nelson Dewey State Park which was the original park name. Later, it served as a place for park announcements and trail information. The kiosk is the only one which still exists in Wyalusing State Park. In 2010 the kiosk was moved to its present location by park staff. Camp Hosts replaced the old roof with new cedar shakes.

The sign shown to the left is entitled “Heal The Man, Heal The Land”. Through excerpts and photos, the information sign tells about the of the formation of the Civilian Conservation Corps and how it helped “young men rediscover hope and renew faith in their country and themselves”.

The second informational sign is entitled, “A Nation in Despair”. The informational sign brings the Civilian Conservation Corps closer to Wisconsin. It tells how the Milk Strike of 1933 affected farmers and failing factory jobs affected Wisconsin families.

When the signs are finally mounted in the kiosk they will look like the edited photos. Clicking on the signs will enlarge the view.

Together, the two signs, inform the park visitor about the importance of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Friends of Wyalusing continue to educate park visitors about the CCC and the WPA though educational kiosks throughout the park and the newly named building #1724.

Works Progress Administration (WPA)

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942. The CCC men of Camp Nelson Dewey were dismissed in 1937. Camp Nelson Dewey was located on the land of the Outdoor Group Campground of Wyalusing State Park.
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was the largest and most ambitious of Roosevelt’s New Deal. It employed millions of unskilled workers to carry out public works projects. Between 1935 and 1943, the WPA provided almost eight million jobs.

In the spring of 1938 WPA workers arrived at Nelson Dewey State Park (Wyalusing State Park). The workers did not stay at the park in the “old” CCC barracks that were still at the park. Instead, they went home each night. The Camp Nelson Dewey barracks remained in the park until 1942.
The first task for the WPA workers was to finish the roof of the park pavilion (later, named The Peterson Shelter). The CCC had completed the masonry and stonework prior to leaving. (Photo left: Early postcard. Please note absence of roof on wood shed and bench.)

The WPA workers constructed six additional buildings in Nelson Dewey State Park: stone picnic shelters at Point Lookout, The Knob, Green Cloud picnic area, Homestead picnic area, and Henegar Point. The WPA finished building the “Old Park Office” in 1939. This structure served as the State Park office until 1998. (Photo right: 1940’s photo of Henegar Point.)
The WPA workers did not stop at building stone structures still found in Wyalusing State Park. The workers built a road into what is now Wisconsin Ridge Campground. They also constructed a road to the far south end of the park, Henegar Point. The road was built on a CCC created trail. Today, the road is called Cathedral Tree Drive.
The WPA also created the tennis courts in 1939. A small hill was dug out in order to create the tennis courts. The dugout dirt was used to create the Point Lookout parking lot.
Without the CCC and the WPA, many of the buildings and roads might not exist today at Wyalusing State Park.

Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC)–Part II

It has been demonstrated that young men can be put to work in our forests, parks, and fields, on projects which can benefit both the nations youth and conservation – April 17, 1936 Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The video, below, features Don Kasparek and another CCC worker. The video did not indicate the other workers name. Together, they tell the story of joining the CCC, the work, and the food.
1933 saw the beginning of the Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) and the Works Progress Administration(WPA). The youthful labor left behind by these groups, are visible today. During this time, the Wyalusing State Park was known as Nelson Dewey State Park.
In 1935, Camp Nelson Dewey began operations. The camp consisted of officers quarters, barracks, mess hall, latrines, infirmary, recreational hall, and supply depot.
Enrollees found themselves with other young men who were looking for ways to support their families back home. Don Kasparek, one of those men, arrived at Nelson Dewey Camp from a camp in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. Originally, he lived in Chicago, Il. Kasparek, having taken advantage of early training, found himself working as an assistant company clerk while at Camp Nelson Dewey.
From June of 1935 through October of 1937 Company 2672 worked on projects at the park as well as other close by locations. Paul Lawrence, the park superintendent at the time, as well as other personnel, performed supervisory and planning of CCC projects.
The men of the CCC worked hard and played just as hard. The CCC leveled the uneven baseball field that had been used by the Glenn Park baseball team and formed their own baseball team. Soon a park sponsored CCC baseball team was formed and played against other local teams from the area.
The men of Company 2672 constructed three stone drinking fountains between the ball field and Point Lookout. The fountain refreshed the players as well as other park visitors. The fountains were dismantled later because of faulty plumbing and crumbling stone work.
Company 2672 of the CCC was dismissed in October of 1937. Soon after, in the spring of 1938, many of the same men returned to the park under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration(WPA). They did the same work as the CCC. However, the men of the WPA were allowed to return home each night. Camp Nelson Dewey remained standing until 1942. It was not used to house workers between 1938-1942.

Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC)–Part I

The Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) began it’s work at Wyalusing State Park (formerly Nelson Dewey State Park) in 1935. The work continued until 1937.

In June of 1935, the men of CCC company 2672 set up tent barracks in what is now, the Outdoor Group Camp. The five tent barracks were home to 200 men. The tent barracks were soon replaced with wooden structures made up of barracks, officer’s quarters, mess hall, latrine, infirmary, recreation hall, and supply depot.
The CCC developed and improved roads, trails, and to some extent, the buildings that can be seen today at Wyalusing State Park.

They improved all of the roads that existed at the time: the road was extended from the Old Park Office to Signal Point Lookout, The road going to the Procession of Indian Mounds, and long Valley Road to the boat Landing. One other road was built no longer available is the road from Long Valley Road to Homestead Picnic Area.
The CCC built or improved nine trails that are or have been part of Wyalusing State Park Trail system. They made a portion of Sand Cave Trail from the Old Park Office to Sand Cave to Old Wagon Road. They extended Sentinel Ridge Trail from Green Cloud Picnic Hill to Point Lookout and connected Bluff Trail to Sentinel Ridge Trail.

They constructed trails out of four existing wagon roads in the park. The wagon road that once used by farmers traveling to Walnut Eddy on the Wisconsin River to the park is now called Old Wagon Road Trail. Old Immigrant Trail is no longer part of the existing trail system. The southern part of Sugar Maple Nature Trail was a private road leading from a farm homestead to the boat landing was converted into a trail. The CCC formed part of Walnut Springs Trail from an old military road leading to a fort in Prairie du Chien.

Finally the CCC crew members restored two Native American foot trails that are no longer part of the Trail System.

Wyalusing Photo Wins State Wide Contest

The Wyalusing State Park photo (shown on left) is one of twelve photos that will be featured in the 2012 Friends of Wisconsin State Parks calendar.

The photo, taken by Randy Paske, shows Long Valley Road and snow covered forest during a January day in 2011. When receiving the award, Paske was asked to comment on the photo. "It was actually warmer than it looked," he quipped.

The twelve photos, taken by amateur photos around Wisconsin, portray a specific Wisconsin State Park, Forest, or Trail. The winning photos were selected from over 150 entries in the Fourth Annual Friends of Wisconsin State Park Photo Contest. The photographers were presented with an award of an advance calendar and a Wisconsin State Park Sticker for 2012. The Annual Awards Banquet of the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks was held at the Lussier Family Heritage Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Several other awards were presented during the evening as well.

In 2010, the Friends of Wyalusing State Park won the Most Successful Friends Group award. Wyalusing State Park also won the Best Water Trail award. A photograph taken by Randy Paske also won. Here is the link for the blog entry. In 2009, Brian Hefty won the Park Manager of the Year.

The framed photo, shown above, will be available during The Friends of Wyalusing State Park's Spirits Night, the last Saturday in September of 2012. The photograph is printed on special linen-foil. It will be also be displayed in the park office.

Jack Frost's Icy Fingers Touch the Leaves of Wyalusing State Park

Wyalusing State Park visitors and campers are encouraged to keep the camera batteries charged and to not put the tent or the picnicbasket away just yet, because the fall color season could be the best it has been in a decade.

The area of southwestern Wisconsin experienced adequate rain during the last two growing seasons and recent weather have includedan ideal combination of warm, sunny days and cool evenings. A vivid display of spectacular fall colors is underway and might well climaxin a burst of colors during the weekend of October 7-9 –just in time for Columbus Day.

According to Native American myth, hunters in the Heavens killed the Great Bear in Autumn and its blood dripped over Earth's forestscoloring some of the leaves red. As the hunters cooked the meat, fat dripped from the Heavens and colored some of the leaves yellow.

Some folks today, assume old Jack Frost is responsible for changes in leaf color. The mythical Jack Frost brings reds and purples to theforest by pinching the leaves with his icy fingers. The hues of yellow, gold, and brown are mixed on his paint palette and applied with quick broad strokes of his brush as he silently moves among the trees to decorate them.

The change in coloring is the result of chemical processes which take place in the tree as the seasons change.
Tree leaves turn color in the fall due to the presence of carotenoids (pigments in the photosynthesizing cells), which are responsible for the fall colors, in the leaves during the growing season. However, the colors are eclipsed by the green chlorophyll. Toward the end of summer, when the chlorophyll production ceases, the other colors of the carotenoids (such as yellow, orange, red, or purple) become visible.

In the Fall, the decrease in intensity and shorter hours of sunlight and the cooler temperatures cause the leaves to stop theirfood-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellowish colors or pigments already in the leaf become visible.

Listed below are the autumn leaf colors of some common trees found in Wyalusing State Park:

Oak leaves tend to turn brown or red or a mix of those two.
Hickory leaves tend to turn bronze colored.
Aspen leaves tend to turn golden colored.
Dogwood leaves tend to turn a mix of purple and red.
Maple tree leaves vary quite a bit in autumn color.
Red maple will turn scarlet.
Sugar maple will turn orange-ish/red.
Black maple will turn bright yellow
Elm tree leaves tend to simply fall off without really changing color much before falling.

The best conditions for production of these intense shades of red are bright sunny days followed by crisp, cool nights.

As you walk the trails of Wyalusing State Park in the late evening or very early morning be on the lookout for a Great Bear in the Sky or an elfin ice man sneaking around the woods.
Be sure to take time to walk in the woods or drive along the country roads and marvel at the magic wrought by mythological creatures and nature.

Archaeological Society and Spirits of Wyalusing Visit Park

A perfect fall Saturday greeted the campers and visitors of Wyalusing State Park on September 24, 2011. The threatening rain clouds dissolved into a bright, warm sunny remainder of the day. Park visitors were busy with morning chores, hiking and discovering new trails, visiting with friends over a roaring campfire, or watching the soaring birds glide over the Wisconsin Ridge.

Elsewhere in Wyalusing State Park, the Wisconsin Archaeological Society was planning the rededication of the Signal Hill Mound site. The Friends of Wyalusing and the park staff were making ready for the Spirits of Wyalusing Past to be held later that evening.

Wisconsin Archaeological Society Visits Signal Hill Mound Group 100 Years Later

Nearly 100 years ago, to the day, the Wisconsin Archaeological Society visited the "proposed Mississippi-Wisconsin River state park" to create state wide interest in the need for preservation and education of Indian mounds of Southwestern Wisconsin. Part of the festivities included posing for the photo on the left.

The members of the Society traveled by steamboat from Prairie du Chien to the boat landing at the base of the bluff, walked up to the Indian Mound group, and heard speakers, one of which was the daughter of Robert Glenn.

This Saturday, September 24, 2011, the Wisconsin Archaeological Society revisited the same mound group - the Signal Hill Mound group. Once again, part of the activities featured posing for a photograph, in the exact same spot. This photo is shown on the right.

This time, members of the society traveled by automobile. Festivities included a picnic lunch. The society members heard from many speakers celebrating the event. Among the speakers were: Robert "Earnie" Boszhardt, president of the Wisconsin Archaeological Society; Robert Birmingham, Executive Director of the Friends of Aztalan; Bruce Klang, president of the Friends of Wyalusing State Park; and Mark Cup, Executive Director of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway Board.

Pumpkin Carvers leave their Legacy

As the Wisconsin Archaeological Society were digging the fine weather (Sorry! Just had to fit it in somewhere!) campers' families, and park visitors were busy carving pumpkins for the evening festivities.

The carvers, led by Carol Paske, carved over thirty pumpkins provided by the Friends of Wyalusing State Park. Members of a local 4H group and a Prairie du Chien Girl Scout troop participated in the yearly event. This year, a very special visitor from Japan also participated. It was her very first pumpkin carving.

Adults assisted in the cutting open and scooping out of the pumpkins. The pumpkin carving is held at the park's maintenance building. Friendly contests among the carvers to see who could carve the most interesting scenes or the most ghoulish faces on their pumpkins spurred on the creativity of all.

When all of the pumpkins had been carved and the seeds had been swept up, the tired group loaded the pumpkins onto the park's electrically powered vehicle. The pumpkins were delivered and placed around the trail. Candles were placed into the candles in preparation for lighting. The carvers and their families were invited to a sub-sandwich lunch with cake, bars, and beverages which were provided by the Friends of Wyalusing State Park.

The Main Event - Spirits of Wyalusing Past

As the sun was slowly melting into the Mississippi River, the area around the Peterson Shelter, and Point Lookout began to take on an eery glow. The golden leaves of the oaks gave way to lighted torches and glowing pumpkins. The Spirits of Wyalusing Past were ready to make their appearance.
A crowd of over 175 people milled around the Peterson Shelter making ready for the annual torchlit trail leading to five close-by areas where the spirits would have a short presentation.

This year's events had very special guests. Don Kasparek, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, his wife, and Pat Peterson, the daughter of Harv Peterson, were also present. Additional information about the Kaspareks can be seen here.....

A silent auction was also held during the Spirits of Wyalusing, items featured on the auction were: a picture quilt featuring scenes from the park, a hand crafted bowl, a wooden shelf with pegs, a wooden organizer, a bird house, two small beaded doll house bowls, and a hand painted nature scene on shelf fungi. The silent auction was supervised by Marilyn Crubaugh.

The park guests were divided into five groups. The groups were led along a torch lit path by volunteer guides stopping at each of five stations where they were met by a Spirit of Wyalusing.

After visiting all five spirits, the guests returned to the Peterson Picnic Shelter and had treats which were provided by the Friends of Wyalusing State Park. Winners of the silent auction items were announced. Over half of the visitors traveled more than 100 miles for the Spirits of Wyalusing Past. 1/3 of the visitors experienced the Spirits of Wyalusing for the first time. 2/3 of the visitors had been guests two or more times. The farthest visitor was from Japan.

Spirits of Wyalusing - 2011

The Friends of Wyalusing State Park invites the public on Saturday evening, September 24, 2011, for an adventure into history. The Spirits of Wyalusing Past is an annual event sponsored by the Friends of Wyalusing. It begins at 7:00 PM in the Peterson Shelter. The event is free, however any vehicle entering the park will need a Wisconsin State Parks sticker. Stickers can be purchased at the park Visitor Center the day of the event.

Interesting, colorful, historical tid-bits of the area will be presented by 'Spirits of Wyalusing Past'. The spirits will be located near a 500 foot bluff, overlooking the night lights of Prairie du Chien, and the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers.

Participants will need to be able to walk about 0.5 miles along a path lit by torches and hand-carved, lighted pumpkins. The pathway includes a few steps. Guides will walk along with each group lending assistance when needed.

A silent auction featuring quality hand-made items will also be held during the event. Included are one-of-a-kind, hand-made quilt with photos from Wyalusing State Park, and hand painted shelf fungi featuring a fish motif.

Free refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the event. The Friends of Wyalusing use funds raised from the event to assist with park projects as well as the Friends of Wyalusing Endowment fund. Signal Hill Mound rededication set at Wyalusing State Park*
A rededication of Signal Hill Mound at Wyalusing State Park will commemorate the 100th anniversary of its original dedication in 1911. The program will focus on the original dedication and the legacy of archaeologist Charles E. Brown and ongoing efforts to help preserve mound sites by archaeologists and the Wisconsin DNR. The program is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the site adjacent to Wyalusing State Park’s Green Cloud Picnic Shelter near Bagley.
The Wisconsin Archaeological Society is sponsoring a picnic (brat cookout with $5 donation) at the Green Cloud Picnic Shelter following the ceremony. An afternoon tour of the Sny Magill Mound Site at Effigy Mounds National Monument is optional. Those planning to attend should contact Kurt Sampson at ksampson2@wi.rr.com or 414.774.7381.

Wyalusing State Park visitors come to bike, hike, jog, walk, paddle, boat, watch birds, fish, star-watch, play, relax, site-see, explore, rid the park of invasive plants, photograph, picnic, become engaged, get married, have reunions, design and sew quilts, and attend meetings...and CAMP.

Enjoy a camp site located along the Wisconsin Ridge 500 feet above the Wisconsin River. Or, enjoy a secluded campsite located in Homestead Campground. Groups can enjoy a private area at the outdoor group camp. Campgrounds, located in Wyalusing State Park, have access to modern flush toilets and showers. Park areas also have modern non-flush bathrooms with plenty of ventilation. (Additional Photos...)

Also located in Wyalusing State Park is an Indoor Group Camp. Hugh Harper Indoor Group camp has a main lodge and four dormitories. The main lodge houses the kitchen, dining, and meeting facilities. The kitchen is equipped with a gas range (two ovens, six burners, and a griddle), large refrigerator, large freezer, microwave, commercial dishwasher (detergent is provided), coffee percolator, and all cooking, serving and eating utensils. There is a storage room, bathroom with a shower. A large charcoal grill is available just a few steps outside the kitchen. Groups must provide their own food, dish cloths, towels, paper towels, and other kitchen supplies. The four dorm buildings can house up to 27 persons each. Each dorm is divided into two sleeping areas (12 persons each) with bunk beds. A center counselor's room will hold three persons. There are two bathrooms in each dorm. Bathrooms have showers, toilets, and sinks. Campers must provide their own sleeping bags or sheets, blankets, pillows, towels and toiletries. Two of the four dorms are fully accessible. Wyalusing State Park visitors arrive in automobiles, motorcycles, RV's, bicycles, and even canoes and kayaks.

Canoe/Kayak Trail

People, camp, bike, hike, jog, walk, paddle, boat, watch birds, fish, star-watch, play, relax, site-see, explore, rid the park of invasive plants, photograph, picnic, become engaged, get married, have reunions, design and sew quilts, and attend meetings. The list is growing.

Little Sand Cave

Wyalusing State Park offers over 21 miles of trails, nearly six miles of water trail in the backwaters of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers and the main channel of 'Big Muddy', just under ten miles of biking trails, seven miles of x-country ski trails, 2.4 miles of interpretive trails, and 0.8 mile accessible trail. Snow shoeing is also available. There are, at least, three water falls in the park taller than 10 feet. There are numerous other falls which appear periodically.

Squeeze through 'The Keyhole'

Trails follow meadows, skirt a hardwood forest, climb a steep bluff, and descend to the river. An accessible, crushed limestone path stretching around ancient Indian mounds, is available to everyone. A trail squeezes through a "key-hole" formed in limestone, a trail climbs a stairway into a cave spacious enough for a family, a trail goes through and around a water fall, and a trail goes follows wooden stairway to the Mississippi River. Walkers can follow self guided nature trails, learn about early explorers, or marvel at the sites and sounds of the rivers.

Huser Observatory

Star gazers peer though powerful telescopes owned by Star Gazer group of Wyalusing State Park. Visitors can learn about the skies of the area and locate constellations during a visit to Huser Observatory.

Homesead Picnic Shelter

Visitors picnic and grill in any of eight different areas from atop a bluff 500 feet above the Wisconsin or Mississippi Rivers. There are seven picnic shelters and an outside fireplace. All hand constructed of local stone and timbers by the Civilian Conservation Corp and WPA. Fires can be built in anyone of eight fireplaces, seven of which average four feet high and six feet wide.

Prothonotary Warbler

People of all ages travel 100's of miles to Wyalusing State Park and locate more than 90 bird species residing in the park during the summer and 100 more during spring and fall migration. Local specialties include: Cerulean, Yellow-Throated, Kentucky, and Prothonotary Warblers, Cuckoos, Henslow's Sparrow, Acadian Flycatcher, Scarlet Tanager, Wood Thrush, and many others. Wyalusing State Park continues to be listed as the top place, or certainly one of top five places, to bird in Wisconsin.

Why come to Wyalusing State Park? Perhaps the question should be why not come to Wyalusing State Park located in the Driftless area of Southwest Wisconsin.

On a Monument to the Pigeon

We have erected a monument to commemorate the funeral of a species. It symbolizes our sorrow. We grieve because no living man will see again the onrushing phalanx of victorious birds, sweeping a path for spring across the March skies, chasing the defeated winter from all the woods and prairies of Wisconsin.

Men still live who, in their youth, remember pigeons. Trees still live who, in their youth, were shaken by a living wind. But a decade hence only the oldest oaks will remember, and at long last only the hills will know.

There will always be pigeons in books and in museums, but these are effigies and images, dead to all hardships and to all delights.

Book-pigeons cannot dive out of a cloud to make the deer run for cover, or clap their wings in thunderous applause of mast-laden woods. Book-pigeons cannot breakfast on new-mown wheat in Minnesota, and dine on blueberries in Canada. They know no urge of seasons; they feel no kiss of sun, no lash of wind and weather. They live forever by not living at all.

Our grandfathers were less well-housed, well-fed, well-clothed than we are. The strivings by which they bettered their lot are also those which deprived us of pigeons. Perhaps we now grieve because we are not sure, in our hearts, that we have gained by the exchange. The gadgets of industry bring us more comforts than the pigeons did, but do they add as much to the glory of the spring?

It is a century now since Darwin gave us the first glimpse of the origin of species. We know now what was unknown to all the preceding caravan of generations: that men are only fellow-voyagers with other creatures in the odyssey of evolution. This new knowledge should have given us, by this time, a sense of kinship with fellow-creatures; a wish to live and let live; a sense of wonder over the magnitude and duration of the biotic enterprise.

Visitors come to the monument

Above all we should, in the century since Darwin, have come to know that man, while now captain of the adventuring ship, is hardly the sole object of its quest, and that his prior assumptions to this effect arose from the simple necessity of whistling in the dark.

These things, I say, should have come to us. I fear they have not come to many. For one species to mourn the death of another is a new thing under the sun. The Cro-Magnon who slew the last mammoth thought only of steaks. The sportsman who shot the last pigeon thought only of his prowess. The sailor who clubbed the last auk thought of nothing at all. But we, who have lost our pigeons, mourn the loss. Had the funeral been ours, the pigeons would hardly have mourned us. In this fact, rather than in Mr. Du Pont’s nylons or Mr. Vannevar Bush’s bombs, lies objective evidence of our superiority over the beasts.

This monument, perched like a duckhawk on this cliff, will scan this wide valley, watching through the days and years. For many a March it will watch the geese go by, telling the river about clearer, colder, lonelier waters on the tundra.

For many an April it will see the redbuds come and go, and for many a May the flush of oak-blooms on a thousand hills. Questing wood ducks will search these basswoods for hollow limbs; golden prothonotaries will shake golden pollen from the river willows, Egrets will pose on these sloughs in August; plovers will whistle from September skies. Hickory nuts will plop into October leaves, and hail will rattle in November woods. But no pigeons will pass, for there are no pigeons, save only this flightless one, graven in bronze on this rock. Tourists will read this inscription, but their thoughts will not take wing.

We are told by economic moralists that to mourn the pigeon is mere nostalgia; that if the pigeoners had not done away with him, the farmers would ultimately have been obliged, in self-defense, to do so.

This is one of those peculiar truths that are valid, but not for the reasons alleged.

The pigeon was a biological storm. He was the lightning that played between two opposing potentials of intolerable intensity: the fat of the land and the oxygen from the air. Yearly the feathered tempest roared up, down, and across the continent, sucking up the laden fruits of forest and prairie, burning them in a traveling blast of life. Like any other chain reaction, the pigeon could survive no diminution of his own furious intensity. When the pigeoners subtracted from his numbers, and the pioneers chopped gaps in the continuity of his fuel, his flame guttered out with hardly a sputter or even a wisp of smoke.

Today the oaks still flaunt their burden at the sky, but the feathered lightning is no more. Worm and weevil must now perform slowly and silently the biological task that once drew thunder from the firmament. The wonder is not that the pigeon went out, but that he ever survived through all the millennia of pre-Babbittian time.

The pigeon loved his land: he lived by the intensity of his desire for clustered grape and bursting beechnut, and by his contempt of miles and seasons.

Whatever Wisconsin did not offer him gratis today, he sought and found tomorrow in Michigan, or Labrador, or Tennessee. His love was for present things, and these things were present somewhere; to find them required only the free sky, and the will to ply his wings.

Smokey Bear Celebrates 67th birthday at Wyalusing State Park

Over 75 Wyalusing State Park visitors attended Smokey bear's 67th birthday party at Wyalusing State Park on Tuesday evening, August 9, 2011. From the back of the Park's environmentally friendly electric vehicle, Smokey Bear led aparade of children and adults around Wisconsin Ridge Campground. Park campers and visitors decorated their bikes and wagons with birthday balloons and Smokey Bear birthday greetings.

Forester-rangerCindy Kohles, based at the Wilson State Nursery, Boscobel, presented a hands-on program about fire safety to all of the birthday party guests. Park Staff and volunteers of the Friends of Wyalusing State Park led Smokey Bear games and activities. Guests sang Happy Birthday to Smokey Bear. The celebration ended with a decorated birthday cake with 67 candles, cookies and lemonade. Children's names were drawn from a hat and presented with prizes.

Civilian Conservation Corp MemberVisits Wyalusing State Park

Don Kasparek, his wife of 74years, and family, presented Bruce Klang, President of Friends ofWyalusing State Park, with a photo commemorating Kasparek's part inthe CCC. Also in attendance were Gregory Pittz, acting Park LandManager, Beverly Pozega, Park office Manager, and members of theFriends of Wyalusing.

Tuesday, August 9, marks Smokey Bear’s 67th birthday. To celebrate, the Friends of Wyalusing State Park will sponsor a special event in Smokey’s honor. Smokey Bear’s Birthday Party will start with a parade through the Wisconsin Ridge Campground (overlooking the Wisconsin River), led by Smokey Bear himself. All area children and campers are invited to participate in the parade, either on foot or on bicycle. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated bicycle (or trike, wagon, stroller, etc.) as well as the best decorated campsite. The theme for decorating is Campfire Safety/Smokey Bear/Forest Fire Prevention. In addition to the parade, a program on forest fire prevention and campfire safety will be presented. Cindy Kohles, DNR Forest Ranger will have a DNR fire truck on site. The true story of Smokey Bear will be told. Children can play “Pin the Hat on Smokey”. Refreshments will be provided, including a Smokey Bear Birthday Cake, complete with 67 candles, donated by Ma’s Bakery of Bloomington. All children will receive Smokey Bear Activity Books as well as other Smokey related items.
Smokey Bear’s Birthday Party will start at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, in the Peterson Shelter at Wyalusing State Park. Bruce Klang, president of the Friends of Wyalusing State Park encourages local residents to pack a picnic supper and spend an evening at one of Wisconsin’s most scenic state parks. “The festivities should conclude just in time to watch the sun set from the beautiful bluffs high above the Mississippi River”, added Randy Paske, vice president of the organization.

Basket Weaving at Wyalusing

Adults and children joined Effigy Mounds National Monument Ranger, Mary Techau, in the scenic Lookout Point picnic shelter, overlooking the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers at sunset, creating small reed baskets. Over 21 Wyalusing State Park campers joined Techau as all created ornament baskets. The very warm weavers were busy twisting small, thin reeds around a a set of reed spokes, eventually creating three color baskets of all shapes and sizes. Pictured Rock Cave - It's Cool!

Whether camping in the secluded campsites of Homestead Campground or high atop Wisconsin Ridge Campground at Wyalusing State Park in Bagley, WI, the heat and humidity of July takes its toll on campers. Sooner or later, one has to look for relief.

Pictured Rock Cave, located along Sugar Maple Nature Trail, offers a mosquito, gnat free area with a cool, relaxing spring-fed water fall.

Pictured Rock Cave is a sandstone outcropping. During earlier times, Pictured Rock Cave offered protection from the elements and relief from the heat for Native Americans and early settlers. Picto-glyphs could be found on the walls of the cave. However, over time, and vandalism, the picto-glyphs have disappeared.

There is no better place to spend a hot-summer day. Bring along a chair and a book. Or, just sit and contemplate the conversations of Native Americans and early settlers. Leave only footprints behind.

Parts of the original trail were washed away during a July, 2007, thunderstorm Almost eight inches of rain over night. Sugar Maple Nature Trail is the first trail that was rebuilt by a State of Wisconsin DNR trail crew. The crew modified the trail so that hikers could not only walk to Pictured Rock Cave, but also above the cave. (Previous Blog about Sugar Maple Nature Trail construction)

To reach Pictured Rock Cave, drive to the Homestead Picnic area. Park in the small lot east of Homestead picnic shelter along Cathedral Tree Drive. Walk along Sugar Maple Nature trail. take the wooden bridge crossing a small ravine. Continue down the wooden steps until a Y in the trail is reached. Turn left along a wooden fence. Follow the short trail to Pictured Rock Cave. Dogs are not allowed on Sugar Maple Nature Trail.

Greg Pittz

My name is Greg Pittz. I am presently leading this great Park and Staff thru the summer and fall of 2011. My official title is “Parks & Recreation Specialist – Senior”. Don’t be too impressed. The Departments Human Resources required they give me that title to be able to hire me.
I retired from the Department of Natural Resources in December of 2009 after 35 years of employment. I have worked at several Parks and Trails over that time but for the last 14 years I was the Property Supervisor at Yellowstone Lake State Park & Work Unit.
I was asked to come back to the Department starting June 6, 2011, as a Limited Term Employee and assist with the management here at Wyalusing and Nelson Dewey State Parks. I expect to work here thru October of this year.
I am married and live in Dodgeville, WI with my wife Linda. We have three children, Brady - 26, Katy - 23 & Stephany - 21.
In my short time here I have been extremely impressed with the activities of the Staff, Volunteers and the Friends Group. Now I know why Wyalusing has in the past and continues to win awards from the State as “Best Property”.

Gifford Lands

Last winter, La Crosse-based local land trust Mississippi Valley Conservancy (MVC) learned of some land for sale adjacent to Wyalusing State Park. The land had been in the Gifford family since 1974 and includes 633 acres between County Road X and Gasner Hollow. The property includes 1-mile of frontage along County Road X adjacent to Wyalusing. Ridgetops on the property overlook the Mississippi River and the slopes are the steep, rugged bluffs so characteristic of the Driftless Area. The 640-acre property boasts multiple springs, seeps, creeks, and waterfalls, including at least two that drop over 75 feet to the ground. The site is a haven for forest-interior birds, including Cerulean Warblers, Kentucky Warblers, Acadian Flycatchers, Veery, Louisiana Waterthrush, Wood Thrush, and Black-billed Cuckoo. Many of these species have been declining nationwide due to habitat loss. They specifically nest in unfragmented blocks of forest habitat, such as that found on the Gifford family’s land. In addition to the birds, the site offers at least one Native American linear effigy mound, and unique geological features known as “phytotherm barrages”.

It is a rare opportunity for any conservation organization to be able to protect a square mile of habitat, and that adjacent to a state park of the size and ecological quality of Wyalusing! Mississippi Valley Conservancy's plan would be to acquire the land for public hiking, birding, hunting, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing.

MVC is actively seeking grants and donations to help fund this incredible project! To date, we’ve identified grant opportunities to cover the majority of this purchase, but we still need $30,000 to cover earnest money and other transactional expenses.

A Rare Event - Canoe trip to the Wisconsin River

On Sunday, June 5, 2011, Wyalusing State Park, along with all of Wisconsin State Parks, held an open house. The Friends of Wyalusing State Park, provided cookies, lemonade and coffee for the event. The Friends also provided special free programs for all of the visitors.

Bruce Klang and Randy Paske, members of the Friends of Wyalusing State Park, led a canoe/kayak trip through the backwaters of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers on Saturday, June 4, 2011, as part of the open house weekend.

Through the expert guidance of Bruce Klang, a Wyalusing State Park retired ranger, 12 or so experienced paddlers made like early explorers, following uncharted waterways, and reached the Wisconsin River just west of the Burlington Northern Railroad trestle on the Wisconsin River. The white arrows, on the map shown on the left, show the route taken by the group. The yellow dots show the marked water trail.

The higher than usual 13 foot water level opened up many pathways which are normally closed. It is NOT recommended that lone paddlers, without a guide, take this voyage on. During normal water level, currents on the Wisconsin River are generally swift. The presence of sandbars and undercurrents, at normal water levels, may tax the novice paddler. In addition, turning into the existing water trail from the north requires a knowledge of the trail. Most of the canoe/kayak trail signs are located on the east side of trees. The trail is really meant to follow in a counter clockwise direction.

Open House at Wyalusing State Park

Free admission to all state parks, forests and trails Enjoying Wisconsin State Parks, Forests, Trails and Recreation Areas is a bargain any time of year but on the first Sunday of June they are an exceptional value, as entrance to any state park, forest, trail and recreation property is free.

Events begin early at Wyalusng State Park. Bruce Klang, president of the Friends of Wyalusing and Randy Paske will lead a canoe/kayak water trail paddle following the 4.9 marked water trail along the back waters and the edge of the main channel of the Mississippi River. The guided paddle begins at the park's boat landing at 9:00 AM. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent at the park's concession stand or, you can bring your own. It is desirable to have some experience. The paddle will take about three hours. Later in the day, Klang will also present a free program featuring Wyalusing State Park. A vehicle admission sticker is needed to enter the park on Saturday.

On Sunday, Open House Day, The Friends of Wyalusing will have a reception welcoming all park visitors with cookies from Ma's Bakery in Bloomington, Wi, and a beverage beginning at 1:00 P.M. Bring a white t-shirt, dish towel or something to create your very own fish print art project! This event is FREE and admission to the park is also FREE. Members of the Friends of Wyalusing State Park will be on hand with the fish prints.

“Open House Day is an opportunity for all residents and visitors to explore some of Wisconsin’s most beautiful natural locations and enjoy a wide variety of outdoor recreation,” says Dan Schuller, Wisconsin State Parks director.

“This year Gov. Scott Walker has officially proclaimed June 2011 as Great Outdoors Month in Wisconsin to highlight the benefits of outdoor activity and focuses attention on our natural resources, including parks, forests and other public lands and waters. State Parks Open House Day will allow people across the state to take in a full day of Wisconsin’s Great Outdoors hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, or just relaxing.”

Reservable campsites in Wisconsin state park and forest campgrounds are generally in high demand for the Memorial Day weekend, but there are often campsites available for the weekend of State Park Open House at many parks and forests. Camping fees do still apply on state park open house day. People can check campsite availability or reserve a site (minimum two nights) through the State Parks Web site [www.wiparks.net].

Free Fishing Weekend June 4-5
People of all ages can fish for free in Wisconsin on June 4 and 5, the state’s Free Fishing Weekend, and now it's easier than ever for newbies to cast a few.

All the waters of the state are open, including Wisconsin waters of Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and rivers bordering Wisconsin. Residents and nonresidents of all ages can fish without a fishing license (or trout or salmon stamps) over these two days. However, all other fishing regulations apply, including how many fish anglers can keep and limits on the minimum size of fish they can keep.

Mushrooming at Wyalusing State Park

Spring showers not only bring flowers to Wyalusing State Park but, the spring weather also brings out "morellers" or "shrumers".

"Shrumers" walk the trails with eyes locked on the forest floor. In hand, is a stick used to move leaves away from dead stumps. Often the stick carries magical powers that, when activated, guides the owner to the location of the morel mushroom.

If a shrumer is lucky enough to find a dead elm tree a feeding frenzy ensues. The morel spore underneath the bark falls on the ground, winter passes and then if spring conditions including rain, temperature and soil are just right, morels can be found. Serious shrumers carry a soil thermometer.

The exact science of conditions conducive to morel growth is so elusive

that the mushrooms could not be grown commercially with any consistency until recently, despite market demand driving prices as high as $45 to $50 per pound found at one local fish market in prairie du Chien, WI. Wisconsin State parks allow harvesting of morel mushrooms for individual consumption. Morels can not be harvested for sale.

Shrumers are known to describe a successful hunt in general terms. Very few will reveal the secret hideout of morels or methods used to hunt them. One recent visitor describes the perfect shruming time, "When wild plum trees start blooming and when lilac flowers are starting to die I start searching for morels on south facing hillsides first. Morels seem to come all at once, and then that’s it."

In many ways, the benefits found in a search for the morel mushroom in April and May is like any other “hunt”; anticipation of being able to participate again following long months of inactivity; the challenge of knowing where to locate the morel with the very real chance of failure regardless of that knowledge, and if the hunt is successful, the guarantee of sitting down to enjoy the fruit of the harvest. A feast of morels created with family recipes and frequent retelling of the ever expanding hunt story frequently follows each feast. Soon it is often difficult to discern truth from the made up part.

Some mushrooms are deadly or extremely hazardous when consumed; see List of deadly fungi. Others, while not deadly, can nevertheless cause permanent organ damage. The literature strongly advises that you:*

Only eat mushrooms you have positively identified yourself.
Identify mushrooms a second time during preparation and cook them properly (only a few species can be eaten raw)
Don't combine mushrooms types.
Inform yourself about deadly mushrooms that are look-alikes of edible ones. "Deadly twins" differ regionally, so take into account regional variation.
Don't gather mushrooms that are difficult to identify, unless you have expert knowledge. This applies especially to the mushrooms of the genus Amanita or Cortinarius and "little brown mushrooms."
Consume only a small amount the first time you try a certain species. People react differently to different mushrooms, and all mushroom species cause adverse reaction in a few individuals, even the common champignon.^[1]

Arbor Day - Cleo Haugh

On April 28th, a group of Iowa-Grant students, teachers, and parents planted a red oak tree in memory of Cleo Haugh.

The tree was planted at Wyalusing State Park near the main lodge at the indoor group campsite.

Cleo was the curriculum director for the Iowa-Grant School District for many years. He was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the outdoor education program for the 8th grade Iowa-Grant students. His dedication resulted in hundreds of memories, stories, and a great program that continues today.

His leadership role is still evident in the teachers and parents who are in charge and support the students’ efforts.

On behalf of the Iowa-Grant students, teachers, and parents, we thank Cleo and his family for his tireless work and years of recruiting special people to work and enjoy a unique experience with our future adults.

Arbor Day Celebration

Students from Iowa Grant Middle School celebrated Earth-Arbor Day during a morning ceremony held at the Hugh Harper Indoor Group Camp at Wyalusing State Park on Friday, April 29, 2011.

A group of eighth graders assisted Friends of Wyalusing State Park president Bruce Klang and members Ruth Klang, Kathy and Randy Paske, and Dave Weiderholt.

Eight trees, four maple and four white oak, were planted along the parking lot.The trees were purchased by The Friends of Wyalusing State Park.

The school was at the Hugh Harper Indoor Group Camp as part of the eighth grade curriculum. A school representative said that the school has been coming to the park since 1965.

The first Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 by a bunch of Nebraska farmers who were living in sod huts on the open prairies and trying to make a living. A newspaperman named J. Sterling Morton came up with the idea of planting trees to provide fuel, building materials, erosion control, windbreaks, and shade from the prairie sun. On that first Arbor Day, those Nebraska farmers got to work and planted over a million trees.

The following are some statistics on just how important trees are:

“The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.” —U.S. Department of Agriculture
“If you plant a tree today on the west side of your home, in 5 years your energy bills should be 3% less. In 15 years the savings will be nearly 12%.” —Dr. E. Greg McPherson, Center for Urban Forest Research

The Grand Tour - Final in a Nine Part Trail Series

Walking has it all. Simple and natural, it doesn't require any instruction or skill. It can be a very modest form of exercise or it can demand enough skill and intensity to be an Olympic sport. You can walk alone for solitude or with friends for companionship. You can walk indoors on a treadmill or outside in the city or country, at home or away. You can get all the benefits of moderate exercise with a very low risk of injury. And to boot, walking is inexpensive. More than 2,400 years ago, Hippocrates said, "Walking is a man's best medicine." Of course, he also said, "To do nothing is sometimes a good remedy."

The Grand Tour
Wyalusing State Park features eleven trails. some of which are easy and others provide a challenge. The trails feature caves, prairies, springs, and bluffs. Each one offers views and memories along the way.
There is still one more trail that Wyalusing State Park features - The Grand Tour!

The Grand Tour of Trails isn't listed as an "official" trail. It's not a secret. The Grand Tour Trail is a system of trails encompassing Wyalusing State Park.

The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour Trail walkers are an elite group of dedicated hikers. A Grand Tour Trail walker qualifies by walking the above route within a contiguous 48 hour period. This writer knows only one Grand Tour Walker. Surely there have been more.

A walk on Bluff Trail

Exercise burns calories. In the case of walking and running, the calories burned depend much more on the distance covered and body weight than on the pace of the walk. This table shows calories burned per mile of walking or jogging on the level for people of varying weights:*(Harvard Medical School)

Follow these common sense rules

Signal Point

Before you leave, plan ahead. Learn about the area ahead of time. Plan your trip carefully according to routes and the time you have available. Check weather reports before you set out.
Prepare yourself physically. If your planned recreation calls for considerable physical exertion, get in shape beforehand. Do not attempt The Grand Tour if it is beyond your physical capabilities.
Leave word of your destination and schedule. In order to locate you in an emergency or send assistance should you need it, leave word at home or with a friend as to where you are going and when you intend to return.
Dress appropriately for the season and wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. Layered clothing is best to meet changing weather conditions. If cool or wet conditions can be expected it is recommended that you avoid cotton clothing, which insulates poorly when wet and dries very slowly.
Carry a compass and a topographic map of the area and know how to use both.
Take along appropriate equipment and supplies. A day pack containing rain gear, extra warm clothing, high energy food, water, first aid kit, pocket knife, whistle and matches in a waterproof container are recommended. Sunglasses and insect repellent are also handy.
Do not drink water from ponds or streams.
If you become lost, keep calm, stay dry, keep warm and stay put.
If the weather is particularly cold or bad and you must spend the night in the woods, also build a small shelter using dead branches, hemlock boughs and leaves. The shelter will serve as a "cocoon" and should be just big enough for you to lie in comfortably. Set up camp before darkness falls.
If you feel you can try and find your way out of the woods, remember that following streams downhill will nearly always lead you back to signs of habitation.
Any person knowing you are overdue should contact the Park authorities.
In case of accident, at least one person should remain with the injured person. Know and use basic first aid techniques

Part 8 - Turkey Hollow Trail, Walnut Springs Trail

Due to the wide range of plant life and varied topography, many species of plants and animals can be seen along the way, including the elusive turkey. Due to several small hills, Turkey Hollow Ski Trail offers a more challenging route for the experienced skier .*

Trail Rating Guide:

1=walking on a level paved road.
10=Walking on an unmarked trail up a bluff, covered with leaves, poison ivy, tree roots and boulders the size of a house.

Difficulty: 2.5-3
Bathrooms: Huser Astronomy Center, Visitor Center, south loop of Homestead campground, and Homestead Picnic area.
Parking: Huser Astronomy Center, or Park Visitor Center parking lot, or south loop of Homestead Campground, or Homestead Picnic Shelter.

Description:

Wide, grassy, rolling, slopes. Some mosquitoes in the pines. Open fields, brush lands, oak forests, and mature pine plantation. This trail is ideal for wildlife observation. Due to the wide range of plant life and varied topography, many species of plants and animals can be seen along the way, including the elusive turkey.

During mornings, dew will be found on the grass.

This trail is a favorite among birders. Bring your binoculars and bird book. An excellent trail to checkoff bird sightings.

Located near Homestead Campground, this trail will be enjoyed by all in the family.

The trail is a combination trail: walking and xc-skiing. Due to several small hills, Turkey Hollow Ski Trail offers a challenging route for the experienced skier.

Walnut Springs Trail—

This trail connects the Astronomy Center to Sand Cave Trail, running parallel to State Park Road. This connecting trail passes through grassland and the edge of a white pine plantation (0.5 mile).

Description:

Walnut Springs Trail is provided so that walkers (and bicycle riders) will not have to walk along the road. It is relatively level. Enjoy the walk as it transitions from meadows, through a pine plantation and into a hardwood forest.

Sugar Maple Nature Trail - Part 7 in a Series

A self guided nature trail provides informational signs identifying various plants and giving ecological principles. A short side trail leads to Pictured Rock Cave which displays a small waterfall tumbling over a limestone outcropping (1.5 mile loop).*

Bathrooms: Homestead Picnic Shelter and the boat landing.

Sugar Maple Nature Trail is a self-guided nature trail with informational signs identifying various plants and explaining ecological principles. A short side trail leads to Pictured Rock Cave with a small waterfall tumbling over a limestone outcropping.

If parking at the boat landing, the trail head is reached by crossing the railroad tracks and up Long Valley Road. Look for the trail sign on the east side of the road.

If parking west of the Homestead Picnic Shelter, the trail is accessed a few feet south of the parking lot.

Trail hi-lites: cooling off in the Picture Rock Cave grotto, under the water fall; walking above the waterfall; walking along an old forest road.

During a hot July or August day, this is also a marvelous place to sit and relax in the cool surroundings. Very few, if any, mosquitoes are found in Picture Rock Cave.

Description:

This is the first trail to be redone by the Wisconsin trail crew, in 2009. A new trail head was laid out for the east terminus. The trail around the top of Picture Rock Cave is new.

Homestead Picnic Area and Homestead Campground is named for the Glenn family. This area had been their home. Paul Kosir, in his book, Wyalusing History, The Park, the People, the Land, offers several pages about Robert Glenn, his family and his vision.The book may be purchased at the Park Visitor Center.

The trail head is located just west of the parking lot on Cathedral Tree Drive near Homestead Picnic Shelter. The trail starts out heading south from the small parking lot for about 100 feet. This part of the trail is wide and an easy walk passing through a hardwood forest. The trail takes a sharp turn west and follows an old road bed down a gently sloping hill. The difficulty level is 1.5-2.

Continue following an old forest road.

The trail sign, about 500 feet from the trail head, marks the beginning of the loop. If the trail is followed down the forest road, west, it will, eventually, come to the boat landing.

Instead of following the old forest road down hill, turn north, crossing a wooden bridge. This bridge is the only wooden foot bridge left in Wyalusing State Park after the rain storm of 2008. The bridge was constructed by the Wisconsin Progress Works. (Lookout for the troll rumored to be living under the bridge!)

Just over the bridge, the difficulty level rises 3.5-4.0. There are a series of widely spaced steps. Continue following the steps, about 200 feet, until coming to a wooden rail fence. The trail makes a Y. Take the short trail west, into Picture Rock Cave.

The short trail leading to Picture Rock Cave is another of Wyalusing Park's oldest trails. The trail is very narrow and has rock steps erratically spaced. At this point, the difficulty is 6-6.5. The walk is a very short one and well worth the extra effort.

The water fall, albeit a small amount of water at times, falls almost 50 feet. The walker can go under the falls as well as walk in back of it. Paul Kosir's book describes how this became known as Picture Rock Cave.

Leave Picture Rock Cave retracing the side trail. Continue along the wooden fence, north for about 50 feet. Just as the trail makes a quick turn west, it passes the origin of the stream that creates the water fall. Look carefully at the perfectly round holes created when water swirls small pebbles along the sand stone water bed just as it falls over the ledge. A picturesque grotto is formed upstream.

Continue a very short distance, walking over flat stones. These stones were hand carried by the Wisconsin trail crew and placed so that the walker would not have to walk in a spring fed stream.

Prior to 2009, very few people explored this part of the park. Look to the south(left). You are looking into Picture Rock Cave! A miraculous view. This is only one of two views that look down into a cave. The other one is Big Sand Cave.

The wide trail continues following the contour of the hill side. The trail is cut into the side of the hill for easier walking. The difficulty level is 2.5-3 and gently slopes downhill. Eventually, the trail takes a sharp switch-back turn south and parallels Long Valley Road. The trail is above the road.

The trail will eventually meet Long Valley Road. At this point, the walker can walk along the road, and across the tracks. Take a walk out on the fishing pier. Visit with the people fishing. Most of them enjoy telling about the latest one that got away.

The canoes are available for rent at the concession stand located at Wisconsin Ridge. Wyalusing State Park is one of a few Wisconsin State Parks that have a marked canoe trail. The canoe trail is a 5.9 mile loop.

There are bathrooms located close to the railroad tracks.

Return to Sugar Maple Nature Trail by recrossing the railroad tracks. Walk up Long Valley Road to the trail sign.

The return trail is along an old forest road. It is very wide. The difficulty level is 2.5-3.5. The trail tread is a mixture of sand and dirt. A few places have rocks covering the trail surface. During wet periods, a couple of short sections have springs.

The trail is a gradual ascent back to the Homestead Parking Lot. Look into the valley below. In addition, stop and take a look over your shoulder. You may be able to see the Mississippi River.

Sentinel Ridge Trail (Part 2) Part 6 in a Series

Sentinel Ridge Trail Running from Point Lookout to the boat landing, this trail turns the corner from the Wisconsin River to the Mississippi River. Midway along the trail is the Passenger Pigeon Monument and a series of nature labels describing the history of the park (1.6 miles).
Sentinel Ridge Trail Loop—There is a .5 mile loop around the Indian Mounds on Sentinel Ridge Trail that is wide and level, providing access to the mobility impaired. Nature labels are also located along that loop.

Sentinel Ridge Trail – Part Two

Park either at Pigeon Monument or the Wyalusing State Park's boat landing. This section of trail is rated 5-6. Distance 1.4 miles round trip. There are outhouse bathrooms located at the Wyalusing State Park boat landing. No bathrooms are located at Green Cloud Picnic Area or Pigeon Monument.

The second section of Sentinel Ridge Trail is marked by an increase in difficulty. The walker will be descending from the top of the bluff to Wyalusing State Park's boat landing – about 500 feet. The trail tread is narrow and made up of dirt and small rocks.

This part of the trail does have a long multi-tiered wooden stairway. This is one of two located in the park. A much smaller stairway is found at Treasure Cave. This section of Sentinel Ridge Trail closely parallels the Burlington Northern railroad tracks located below the trail.

The last 250 feet of the trail makes a steep descent onto Long Valley Road, about 200 feet from Wyalusing State Park's boat landing.

Stop at the boat landing, and walk onto the fishing pier. If anyone is fishing, stop and chat. You will find most are willing to chat and tell stories of the one that got a way.

The canoes and kayaks are for rent at the concession stand. Wyalusing State Park is one of few state parks that have a marked canoe trail. The canoe trail is a loop of 5.9 miles.

If this is a round trip, you can either retrace your steps along the trail or walk back on Long Valley Road. Many birders will walk along this section of road in early spring. The road is a long gradual climb. During summer periods, the road is busy with cars pulling boat trailers and others trying their luck at fishing.

If you chose to walk the entire Sentinel Ridge Trail, walking back along the road is an option. However, the last 500 feet of the walk is really uphill!

At the end of your walk, be sure to stop at the concession stand for a cool beverage and a snack. You have earned it!

Sentinel Ridge Trail (Part 1) Part 5 in a Series

Sentinel Ridge Trail Running from Point Lookout to the boat landing, this trail turns the corner from the Wisconsin River to the Mississippi River. Midway along the trail is the Passenger Pigeon Monument and a series of nature labels describing the history of the park (1.6 miles).
Sentinel Ridge Trail Loop—There is a .5 mile loop around the Indian Mounds on Sentinel Ridge Trail that is wide and level, providing access to the mobility impaired. Nature labels are also located along that loop.

Distance: 1.6 miles Non-looping
Time: 1-1.5 hours (One Way)
Difficulty: 2-3. Short stretch on the south end is 6-6.5.
Mosquitoes: mild to moderate. Much of the trail is along the top of a bluff and in the woods.
Bathrooms: Wisconsin Ridge Picnic area. None at Green Cloud Picnic Area. Bathrooms at boat landing.
Parking: Point Lookout Picnic area, Pigeon Monument, or boat landing, The parking choice depends on the trail head.

Sentinel Ridge Trail

From Point Lookout, southwest to the boat landing, there are a few slopes and one very big hill leading to (or from) the boat landing. Level of difficulty at the boat landing hill is 6-6.5

The trail turns the corner from the southern bluffs of the Wisconsin River to the Mississippi River. The trail was not affected by the storm damage of 2008. It is one of the original trails of the park and has probably been in existence before the park was named. The trail tread is narrow and has small rocks located along the path.

Sentinel Ridge Trail has several hi-lights along the way: Green Cloud Picnic area, Pigeon Monument, a short accessible nature trail circumnavigating a series of mounds, effigy mounds, interpretive signs, tower of wooden stairs, and, at the trail's end, the Wyalusing State Park boat landing.

The trail does not make a loop. However, the trail can be split into two parts based on difficulty level:

Part one: From Point Lookout around the accessible trail at Pigeon Monument and back along the same trail. Distance about 1.6 miles. This section of trail would be rated between 2-3.

Part two: Park either at Pigeon Monument or the Wyalusing State Park boat landing. This section of trail would be rated 5-6. Distance 1.4 miles round trip.

Sentinel Ridge Trail - Part One
(from Point Lookout around the accessible trail at Pigeon Monument and back along the same trail) Distance about 1.6 miles. This section of trail would be rated between 2-3. Time 1-1.5 hours.

Park either at Point Lookout picnic area parking lot or Green Cloud Picnic Area. There is no bathrooms located at Green Cloud Picnic area.

Starting at Point Lookout, the trail head is just west of the stone wall at Point Lookout. This section of trail is a gradual slope along the bluff of the Wisconsin River to the north. It is one of Wyalusing State Park's oldest trails The trail bed is dirt and small rocks. In the fall, the leaves covering the tread maybe slippery.

The trail is scenic often overlooking the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. It is a favorite for bird watching.

The trail has a gradual incline leading to the Green Cloud picnic area. Paul Kosir's book, Wyalusing History, The Park, the People, the Land, has an article about the Native American, Green Cloud.

Green Cloud picnic area has a small stone picnic shelter. The stone shelter is the only shelter in the park with axe-hewn curved benches. In addition, Green Cloud picnic area has a lookout where one can see the Mississippi River, Prairie du Chien, and, across the river, Marquette, IA.

From Green Cloud picnic area, walk south, along the parking lot. Continue up a small hill, along the road. While walking along the road, look to the left, (east). There is a tree with sharply curved base. Not everyone in the park is aware of this. Some people claim this is a Native American trail marking tree. The curve indicates the direction of the trail.

Passenger Pigeon Monument Dedication

The trail leads to Pigeon Monument. Pigeon Monument is the only monument in the US dedicated to the now extinct Passenger Pigeon. Paul Kosir's book has several pages dedicated to this monument and the mound located between the monument and the road.

Continuing to follow the crushed limestone path, south. Located on this path, overlooking the Mississippi River, is one of two known Bear effigies located on the park. The other effigy is located between the playground and volleyball court.

Interpretive signs are located along a crushed limestone path encircling several mounds. The signs interpret the ancient beginnings of Wyalusing State Park. This circular trail is .5 miles long. Difficulty level 1.5.

This is the terminus of part one of Sentinel Ridge Trail. Retrace your steps back to Point Lookout. Taking the road, back to Point Lookout, for some, may be a daunting task. The road starts out as a downward slope. It is scenic with a deep valley on one side and the bluff on the other. At the stop sign, located at Long Valley Road, the road begins its assent. It is uphill all of the way.

At the end of your walk, be sure to stop at the Friends of Wyalusing State Park concession stand for a cool beverage and a snack.

Whitetail Meadows Trail - Part 4 in a Series

Whitetail Meadows Trail

Distance: The trail is made up of two loops. The inner loop is 1.9 miles, the outer loop is 3 miles. The inner loop will take about 1-1.75 hours. The outer loop 2-2.5 hours.
Time: 1-1.75 hours – 2.5 hours
Difficulty: 2.-2.5. Very gradual elevation changes. During mornings, dew will be found on the grass. This is one of Wyalusing State Park's easiest walking trails.
Mosquitoes: Just before sunset, mosquitoes will be plentiful. Where long sleeves or use repellent.
Bathrooms: found at Huser Astronomy Center.

Description:
Whitetail Meadows Trail begins at the Huser Astronomy Center parking lot. The parking lot is plowed during the winter. Whitetail Meadows Trail follows the boundary between woods and grassland. The trail stays near the top of the valley contours. When other trails are muddy and nearly impassable this trail is good to walk because it is on high dry ground with a lot of grass.

This is a trail for the entire family to enjoy.

Whitetail Meadows Trail is a combination trail: xc-skiing, biking and walking trail.

This trail is also one of the best trails to walk during early evenings, especially during a full moon. A walker will hear coyotes and many birds of the evening. A quiet walker may even see deer grazing. The trail can be a very hot walk during peak summer days. The reward is few mosquitoes. During the late summer the walker will be rewarded with wild blackberries The trail is mostly banked with blackberries.(Thank you Nova for the note re blackberries!)

Sand Cave Trail - Part 3 in a Series

Sand Cave Trail was redesigned and completed in late fall 2009. This trail encompasses Little Sand Cave as well as Big Sand Cave. Black Thunder Point, located between the two caves offers great views of the Wisconsin River. Distance from the old park office to Big Sand Cave (one way) is .8 of a mile. An additional .8 of a mile will take you around the loop past Little Sand Cave.
Total distance of Sand Cave Trail round trip is 2.4 miles.*

Sand Cave Trail features Big Sand Cave, Little Sand Cave and Black Thunder Point.

Thanks to the work of the Wisconsin State Trail Crew of two-three people, the original Sand Cave Trail was redesigned and completed in late fall 2009,

The redesigned trail includes Black Thunder Point and Little Sand Cave. Black Thunder Point offers great views of the Wisconsin River.

Distance from the former park office to Big Sand Cave (one way) is .8 of a mile.

An additional .8 of a mile loop continues to Little Sand Cave.

Description:
Most of the trail follows the contour of the hill side. The trail has very few severe changes in elevation. The trail tread is wide and relatively level. Mosquitoes are moderate during the summer months. Reportedly, there are no mosquitoes in Big Sand Cave.

The trail head is located behind the former park office, to the south. It is marked with a sign. After rainy periods, the trail may be closed for a few days to dry out. Periodic closings will occur until vegetation has grown over the new trail bed. The gradual descent into the hardwood forest is hardly noticeable. A deep ravine in on the north (left). About 0.1 miles from the trail head, the trail reaches a beautiful fern grotto with a small waterfall. Many spring flowers can be seen here.

The trail continues with a short, steep section. Use the large flat rocks to traverse a usually dry stream bed. The flat rocks were quarried and carried in large slings, and placed by hand by the Wisconsin Trail Crew. The trail follows an easterly direction with a hill side on the south and a ravine on the north. The original trail was located on the opposite side of the ravine.

Big Sand Cave

Just after crossing the dry stream bed, the trail makes a gentle turn south. The trail is actually crossing above Big Sand Cave. Keep an eye on the trail and look over your left shoulder. Depending on the amount of leaves on the trees, you may be able to look down into the cave.

After a short walk, the trail makes a 'Y'. Going to the right (east) the trail goes towards Little Sand Cave. Continue straight (north) the trail goes to Black Thunder Point, and left (west) to Big Sand Cave.

Go to Big Sand Cave. Turn south (left). A trail sign should point the way.

The short trail leading to Big Sand Cave Trail is steeper than the main trail. It follows the original trail bed. The wooden stairs (west across the ravine) were part of the original trail. The new Sand Cave Trail eliminated the need for wooden stairs. Most of the stairs were washed out during the rainstorm of 2008. This part of the trail has sizable rocks. Difficulty level is 4.0-5.5.

The rocks, near the mouth of Big Sand Cave, once formed the roof of the cave. During earlier times, the cave was actually much bigger. Paul Kosir, in his book, Wyalusing History: The Park, the People, the Land, retells a wonderful story about the consequences of hog rustling and the part that Big Sand Cave plays.

The floor of Big Sand Cave is usually filled with water supplied by many springs in the area.

In the winter, a frozen water fall forms over part of the cave.


Black Thunder Point

After exploring Big Sand Cave, follow the trail, back to the junction. Continue to follow the trail to the northeast (left), towards Black Thunder Point. A slight increase in elevation towards Black Thunder point is noticeable.

After about 0.1-0.2 miles, the trail tread is changes to sandstone forming the top of the ridge. Black Thunder point is a wonderful point to stop and take in the sights. The Wisconsin River is east. Prairie du Chien may be seen looking west.

At Black Thunder Point, the trail takes a southerly direction, down a gentle slope, into Wild Ginger Hollow. Sometimes, deer or turkey can be seen in the valley below.

Little Sand Cave

Continue about .5 miles to Little Sand Cave. This is the first time, in the park's history, that a marked trail actually leads to Little Sand Cave. The area is picturesque. Take lots of photos. Leave nothing behind but footprints.

After leaving Little Sand Cave, the trail starts level. After a switch-back, it begins a gentle climb back to the top of a ridge. Once on top of the ridge, head south and back to the trail intersection. Follow the trail back to the tail head.

Sand Cave Trail is an excellent trail for snowshoeing. The trail is not a groomed xc trail.

Old Wagon Road Trail

Old Wagon Road (Unofficial Map)

Distance: 1.6 miles (modified loop)
Time: 30-60 minutes
Difficulty: 2.5-6.5

The Wagon Road Trail partially follows a wagon road once used by pioneers. The original wagon road began at a small village, Walnut Eddy, located on the south side of the Wisconsin River. Historical information can be found in Wyalusing History, The Park, the People, the Land by Paul Kosir. Purchase the book at the Park Visitor Center.

This trail is the last one to be reworked by the Wisconsin State Trail Crew since the heavy rains of July, 2008. The trail was placed back into commission in late fall of 2010.

Description:

Terminus - Old Wagon Road

The trail head, across from the tennis courts, is marked by a large wooden sign. The dirt covered trail is a long gradual slope to the Wisconsin River Valley. This part of the trail is a little over 0.1 mile long. It was, and still is, wide enough for farm wagons. After a rain, the trail can be slippery. Mosquitoes are plentiful in late summer. A barricade marks the end of this segment old wagon road. Prior to 2008, Wagon Road Trail continued towards the Wisconsin River.

Cross the small ravine on flat rocks. During rains, a small stream flows between the rocks. The flat rocks were placed across the ravine by the Wisconsin trail crew.

The next segment of the trail is a narrow foot path covered by rocks and, occasionally, tree roots. This segment follows the path of Wyalusing State Park's older foot trails. The trail is relatively steep. Difficulty level is 5.0. This segment of the trail continues an ascent to Yellow Thunder Point. Standing on the ledge of Yellow Thunder Point, one looks over the Wisconsin River, east, towards the highway 18 bridge.

Looking toward Yellow Thunder Point

From Yellow Thunder Point, the trail turns west and continues to climb. The trail tread is loose rocks. In the fall this segment is covered with leaves which can be slippery after a rain or early morning dew. The trail end is marked by a rock picnic shelter, called The Knob. Difficulty level 5-6.5

From The Knob follow either of the Wisconsin Ridge Campground roads past the concession stand.

Continue following the road back to the tennis court parking lot.

If walking the trail in the reverse direction (starting at the eastern end of Wisconsin Ridge Campground), be very careful of the descent from The Knob to Yellow Thunder Point. Slippery leaves or loose rocks may be difficult.

March is here! Can spring be far behind? It's time to start planning.

The next series of blogs will be about the14.2 miles of land trails of Wyalusing State Park. Wyalusing State Park is blessed with hiking trails that traverse some of the most beautiful scenery in Wisconsin. Trails offer a variety of terrain ranging from easy, moderate slopes to steep climbs with steps.

Bluff Trail -

A short, scenic trail that begins at Point Lookout offers excellent scenery. This trail is currently open from Point Lookout to Treasure Cave. Hikers will pass through “The Keyhole” to reach the stairway to Treasure Cave, a small limestone cavern. (0.2 mile)*

Description:

Council Point

The pathway along Wisconsin Ridge, from Council Point to Point Lookout is blacktop. A wooden railing separates the trail from the edge of the bluff. Erratically spaced stone steps (5-6 steps)are encountered along the way.

Steps to "The Keyhole"

A stone stairway is used to reach Treasure cave. There are about 30-40 steps. The stepping stones were quarried in the park and laid by hand many, many years ago. Thousands of feet have walked on these steps. The erratically spaced steps make it next to impossible for baby strollers to negotiate the steps.

Steep wooden steps are used to get to Treasure Cave. A railing is provided for these steps.

Paul Kosir's book, Wyalusing History, the Park, the People, the Land, has interesting stories about Treasure Cave.

The Guardian Waits

Special Note: Just before passing through "The Keyhole" look for a fence post longer than the others. The post is closest to "The Keyhole". While standing next to the fence post look along the edge of the bluff forming "The Keyhole". A stone face profile will begin to take form. The nose is easily seen. Looking up, find the eye brow and forehead. The lips and chin are a little difficult to make out. Did you see it? Some say that this is the guardian of Treasure Cave. As long as the guardian shows its face, the treasure is safe. Of course, that's just a story......or is it?

Mississippi Ridge Trail -

Mississippi Ridge Trail starts at Homestead Picnic Shelter, crosses Cathedral Tree Drive and runs parallel to it until Henneger Point Picnic Area. The trail follows the bluff along the Mississippi River. An excellent view of the Mississippi River is available from Henneger Point. Bicyclists are welcome to bike the return trip back to Homestead Picnic Area via Cathedral Tree Drive (1.8 miles).

Time: 2-3 hours (by foot)
Difficulty: 2-3
Bathrooms: Homestead Picnic Shelter and Henneger Point.
Parking: Park in the indoor group camp or the lot west of the Homestead Picnic area.

Description:
Mississippi Ridge Trail is a combination trail: hiking, biking, and xc-skiing. At this time, however, it is mostly used for walking and biking.

The trail head is located just west of the entrance to the indoor group camp to Hennegar Point

The first segment of the trail parallels the top of the ridge above the Mississippi River. This segment is 1.8 miles. A few spots have exposed tree roots. There are also a few spots with small rocks. This trail segment is characterized by a few gradual slopes.

The return segment follows Cathedral Tree Drive. The road is blacktopped and bumpy. Mature hardwood trees form a cathedral like cover. A few moderate hills are located in the southern part of Cathedral Tree Drive. Although this is not one of Wyalusing State Park's main roads, keep an eye out for cars.

Henneger Point

The southern most tip of the trail is Henneger Point. Henneger Point has a small stone picnic shelter. A large metal charcoal grill is located close-by. There are picnic tables and benches. This is a wonderful, quiet spot. The ridge overlooks the Mississippi River. Very few mosquitoes.

Spook Hill Mound Group

The northern part of Cathedral Tree Drive has many Indian Mounds. This area is called Spook Hill. Interpretive signs inform the visitor about the importance of the area. Paul Kosir, the author of Wyalusing History: The Park, the People, the Land, describes Spook Hill.

If arriving at Hennegar point by car, visit the old stone and wood fence located on a mowed grass path north of the shelter and 300 feet.

Flushed with Excitement

When you’ve got to go – you’ve got to go! The wooden and concrete pit toilet otherwise known as the outhouse, privy, latrine, vault, crapper, dooley, or even “monuments” as referred to by the Civilian Conservation Corps crews got up and went at Wyalusing State Park.

The pit toilets at Wyalusing State Park were old and dated. The wooden and concrete block buildings were difficult to maintain. The vault style allowed gasses to escape near ground level. In striving to maintain the services of these facilities to our visitors, Wyalusing State Park needed to explore options that minimized cost and construction time. The answer was found in pre-cast concrete construction. Pre-engineered, pre-fabricated concrete toilet buildings are quality-made, durable buildings, that offer time-savings on construction and installation as well as a significant cost savings compared to a site constructed building.

At a glance, these structures look like any typical site-built structure with stone veneer, clad siding and shingle roofs. However the entire building envelope is made from form-lined, cast concrete. The precast units at Wyalusing State Park were manufactured by Huffcoat Concrete, Inc. with main offices in Chippewa Falls, WI. Each unit can weigh up to 50,000 pounds. Each building is designed to withstand wind speeds of 90 plus miles per hour.

Ten precast vault toilets and vaults arrived at preplanned intervals, on oversized low-boy flat bed trailers at Wyalusing State Park, August 15, 2011. In just an hour or two each building and vault were installed by P. A. McGuire, Inc. from Highland, WI. By the end of the day, all ten vault toilets were installed. Some ground restoration was done. A crane capable of lifting 90.000 pounds was used to set all of the components in place. The installation was completed by outfitting the structure with vent stacks.

Electrical wires have to be run. Final landscaping will continue into the Spring. The vault style toilets will be ready for the 2011 season.

The two old pit toilets were replaced at Wisconsin Ridge Campground with a new vault style toilet. The wooden pit toilets at Point Lookout Picnic area were replaced with new vault style toilets now located between the parking lot and the picnic shelter. The single concrete block pit toilet at the outdoor group campground was replaced by two new vault outhouses. One of the structures is in the eastern part near the upper water fountain. The second one is located at the western end, once again, near the water fountain. The last of the new vault style toilets is located between the parking lot and the shelter house at Homestead picnic area. The old wooden pit toilets will be removed.

Groundhog Daze was held on February 5, 2011 in Peterson Shelter at Wyalusing State Park in Bagley, Wi.

Bruce Klang, president of The Friends of Wyalusing State Park gave two presentations: Groundhog Day History and A Year in the Life of the Groundhog. During the second presentation, Klang offered additional verses for the riddle: How Much Wood would a wood chuck chuck...? Klang's addition is below.

A wood chuck wouldn't chuck wood, even if a wood chuck could chuck wood. Chucking wood would do it no good and a good wood chuck does what a wood chuck should.

But how much ground could a groundhog grind if a groundhog could grind ground?

A groundhog could grind ground, a groundhog would grind ground, Pound for pound one of the best diggers around. It digs deep down into the ground so not to be found, by fox or by hound.

Winter Camping at Wyalusing State Park

The prior week brought over 12 inches of blowing snow. Three to five foot drifts blew over Wyalusing State Park roads. The skeleton park crew had been plowing snow, pushing snow, lifting snow, and getting stuck in the snow for the next two days. The weekend was somewhat sunny with little wind. A light snow was forecast for one of the weekend days. The forecast called for daytime temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s.

So, why not go camping?

Let’s be honest, winter camping isn’t for everyone. But for about a dozen hardy souls who enjoy getting away from the maddening crowds of the big city south of Wisconsin's border, the weekend was just right. "This weekend was much better than the one we spent at Governor Dodge State Campground last year. The temperatures were in the low teens....below zero. The wind chill was even colder. We had to keep the beverages in the cooler to keep from freezing! Now, that was cold!" one of the camper's said, smiling. The others, sitting around the campfire, nodded in agreement.

Every year the group of campers get together for winter camping. This year they chose Wyalusing State Park. Most Wisconsin state parks keep a portion of their sites open for winter campers – some even have electrical hookups.

The park staff had plowed out three campsites along Wisconsin Ridge for the campers. The mummy style sleeping bags were lieing on top of a waterproof tarp. "These bags will keep us warm down to 40 degrees degrees Fahrenheit below zero,” said one of the campers. "The snow provides an insulating layer as well. Over the years we have been doing this, we found that a tent would gather moisture on the inside. When morning arrived, we would accidentally shake the tent and get a cold shower. That really woke us up!"

When it comes to staying warm, winter campers need to consume a lot of food while outdoors in winter.

A lot of calories are burned working or playing in the cold. More fuel is needed to run your body. The group brought grills and a camp stove as well as coolers of food. In the winter the animals that usually raid the coolers are in hibernation.

Finally, winter campers should drink plenty of water to stay adequately hydrated, but warns against eating snow because it will cool you down and could bring on hypothermia. Suffice it to say that the group of campers had plenty of beverages.

The main thing about winter camping is it’s lots of fun to be outside in the winter, away from pretty much everyone else. The key, of course, is to be prepared and camp safely and comfortably.

Successful Groundhog Daze

The first annual Groundhog Daze was held at Wyalusing State Park, Bagley, Wi, on Saturday, February 5, 2011. About fifty adults and children enjoyed the warm February winter day for the celebration. Three roaring fires in the fireplaces of Peterson Shelter kept the chill from the air. The children played in waist deep snow.

The Friends of Wyalusing State Park sponsored the event. Hot food, beverages, and special groundhog desserts prepared by the friends group, warmed the crowd's insides.

Bruce Klang, a former Wyalusing State Park employee and president of the Friends group, offered presentations on the history or Groundhog Day as well as a year in the life of the groundhog. The presentations were held in the Peterson Shelter Nature Center. A special verse composed by Klang answered the riddle 'How much wood can a woodchuck chuck?'. Click here for video.

Capture the rainbow

A variety of winter games and activities highlighted the afternoon. Games included “How Much Wood Can a Woodchuck (Groundhog) Chuck”, a fox and the groundhog chase game, and capture the rainbow where participants locate colored ice cubes in the snow. Children also experimented with blowing bubbles and watching ice crystals form inside the bubble.

The afternoon culminated with a twilight walk around plowed and unplowed trails of Wyalusing State Park.

With all of the happy children and adults, surely Spring can't be far behind.

Groundhog Daze

Here is an update to all information concerning trails and Ground Hog Daze at Wyalusing State Park.

Turkey Hollow Trail and Cathedral Tree Drive have been groomed and tracked. Our volunteer groomer rates both trails as "good". Whitetail Meadows Trail is too drifted to do anything with at this time. With warmer temperatures predicted for this weekend (before cold temperatures set in again), we are hoping that the snow will pack, making it easier for the snowmobile to get through the deep snow.

Putting the Groundhog in its Place.

Groundhog Day falls on February 2nd. It's the mid point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. If the groundhog sees his shadow, according to folk tales there will be six more weeks of winter. If it is cloudy and there is no shadow, spring is coming!

The legend of the groundhog's forecasting powers, though up for discussion, dates back to the early days of Christianity in Europe when clear skies on the holiday Candlemas Day, celebrated on Feb. 2, meant an extended winter.

The tradition founds its way to Germany, altering so that that if the sun made an appearance on Candlemas, a hedgehog would cast its shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of cold weather.

The Groundhog Day was then carried on in North America during the late 1800s thanks to a Pennsylvanian newspaper editor and publisher, who organized and popularized a yearly festival in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The festival featured a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil to foretell how long the winter would last.

A typical groundhog, or by its scientific name Marmota monax, weighs approximately 9.5 pounds with a body length reaching about 20 inches.

Groundhogs use their short, powerful legs, claws, and large teeth to dig underground living habitats, which can run quite extensively with as many as five entrances and various tunnels extending some 45 feet, and as deep underground as 5 feet.

Flipping through the history books, it seems Punxsutawney Phil has spotted his shadow 99 out of 114 times. That would mean poor Pennsylvania rarely gets an early spring. However, according to the Stormfax Almanac, the groundhog is only right 39 percent of the time – a failing grade in school terms.

But can you blame him? Most professional weathermen, armed with high-tech satellite imagery and advanced computer models, wouldn't dare guess six weeks into the future. Their accuracy drops quickly even three days out.

In the northern states, winter often barrels past February 2 and continues through April Fool's Day.

Still, Groundhog Day remains a beloved national pastime.

Groundhog Factoids

The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds. Punxsutawney Phil weighs about 20 pounds and is 22 inches long.
Groundhogs are covered with coarse grayish hairs tipped with brown or sometimes dull red. They have short ears, a short tail, short legs, and are surprisingly quick. Their jaws are exceptionally strong.
A groundhog's diet consists of lots of greens, fruits, and vegetables and very little water. Most of their liquids come from dewy leaves.
A groundhog can whistle when it is alarmed. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting.
Insects do not bother groundhogs and germs leave them alone. They are resistant to the plagues that periodically wipe out large numbers of wild animals. One reason for this is their cleanliness.
Groundhogs are one of the few animals that really hibernate. Hibernation is not just a deep sleep. It is actually a deep coma, where the body temperature drops to a few degrees above freezing, the heart barely beats, the blood scarcely flows, and breathing nearly stops.
Young Groundhogs are usually born in mid-April or May, and by July they are able to go out on their own. The size of the litter is 4 to 9. A baby groundhog is called a kit or a cub.
A groundhog's life span is normally 6 to 8 years. Phil receives a drink of a magical punch every summer during the annual Groundhog Picnic, which gives him 7 more years of life.

Most think that winter can complicate plans to spend quality time outside with your children. However, winter can provide many fun things you can do together outside that you cannot do the rest of the year. Wyalusing State Park is open year round. Here are some great Wyalusing winter activities.

Snowshoeing

The nice thing about snowshoeing is the openness of exploration it allows, regardless of whether you pull into a parking lot or just decide to explore off of the nearest trail. Another benefit of the openness that snowshoeing provides is that the snow is likely to be less trampled upon and more light and fluffy. Snowshoeing lets you and the little ones enjoy the nip in the air while surveying the land to see what you can find, much like searching for seashells at the beach. With your children's imaginations as your guide, snowshoeing can become your family's go-to outdoor activity for wintertime.

Stay on marked trails until you're comfortable with the area. If it's your first time on snowshoes, Walk along the unplowed roads. Park in the office parking lot, walk along Homestead campground road.

Stay off of marked x-cross country ski trails.

Sand Cave trail offers a wide trail following the contours of the bluff. Ski poles will help stablize the walker on the few steep sections of the trail. Remember to bring goggles and a thermos of hot chocolate or cider.

Dress everyone in very warm layers. Make sure to use sliding apparatuses that have nothing sticking out, such as an air valve on an inner tube. Bring snacks, hot chocolate, and even lunch.

Tracking Winter Animals

Winter is the perfect time to track animals. We may see fewer animals during the winter, but the season helps us see more evidence of their lives by showing us their tracks. A light snowfall on bare ground or on top of an icy crust provides the blank pages. Armed with a little knowledge, children can decipher the clues that animals leave.

Asking the following questions can help your children in animal identification:

How many toes does the animal have? Deer have two, dogs, cats, and coyotes have four, and weasels have five.
Does the track show claw marks? Squirrel and fox tracks show claws. (Dog tracks do, too.)
Is there a line in the snow? Mice sometimes leave the imprint of a tail in the snow; porcupine tails leave troughs.
Are the tracks spread far apart or are they close together? Answering this question tells children whether the animal is big or small and whether it was traveling quickly or slowly.
Do tracks go over or under downed trees? A bigger animal will go over a downed tree, while a smaller animal may choose to go under it.
Did the animal stop to eat? Be sure to look up. Deer chew on small tree branches.
Do tracks stop at a tree? A squirrel can climb a tree. A rabbit can't.

Even where wild animals aren't that common, tracks can tell useful stories. There are tricks to telling the difference between dog and cat tracks. Dogs have pointed toes, and their tracks often show claw marks. Cat tracks are rounded and don't show claws. Children can remember these differences by remembering that dogs have pointed faces and cats have round heads.

Children should use their ears as well as their eyes to follow winter animals. have the children call barred owls—"who cooks for you, who cooks for you all"—to see if they'll return the call.

Does a woodchuck leave winter tracks?

No.

Groundhogs go into profound hibernation, greatly reducing their metabolic rate. Their body temperature drops to just a few degrees above ambient temperature. Because their hibernation, the deepest portion of the burrow where they hibernate, is below frost line, that produces a body temperature as low as 39-40 degrees F.

Contemplation

High atop Blackhawk Monument rock in Nelson Dewey State Park, gazing across the Mississippi River basin, I find myself deep in thoughts.

The end of the War brought many changes in the lives or our citizens. The men and women, who fought for our freedom, have returned to their loved ones. Hoping for a better life. all have been looking for work.

In the background, I can hear the men of Camp Nelson Dewey, preparing for another day of planting trees, working on park trails, and roads. Stone masons and cutters are working on foundations of the park shelters. Soon, the lookout points will have stone walls making visits safer for the park visitors. The road already reaches into the park so that baseball can be played by Camp Nelson Dewey’s team and the citizens of surrounding local towns.

My reverie is disturbed as the shrill whistle announces an approaching train. The train chugs across the bridge on the Wisconsin River. Smoke drifts across the Mississippi River.

Birds raise from the trees. It seems that each year, there are fewer and fewer passenger pigeons. I am in awe as the weight of the thousands of passenger pigeons bend the limbs of the trees. I wonder if the passenger pigeons will appear this year. With the passing of each year, the numbers of pigeons roosting in the park trees seems to decrease.

As the sun sets, I realize that I will have to leave, to return on another day. Soon, the creatures of the night will make their appearance. I glance over my shoulder. On the edge of the woods, a small ground hog raises on its back feet, sniffing the warm air in anticipation of a night of solitude

Wyalusing Earns Three State Awards*

The best Wisconsin state park for canoeing and kayaking is Rock Island, located off the tip of Door County; while the best park, for winter camping is Pattison, located in Douglas County. Those are among the results of the 2010 Gold Seal Awards after a season-long online survey of park users.

The statewide Friends of Wisconsin State Parks organization runs the Gold Seal Awards program each year to highlight park and trail visitors' picks for the best Wisconsin state park and trail features.

The Gold Seal results were tabulated through the online survey on the Friends of Wiscoasln State Parks website: www.fwsp.org (exit DNR) that asked users which parks had the best offerings in ten categories over the summer

Dear Friends,

I was pleased to accept on your behalf the Hero Award for the most
successful friends group for 2010 at the Friends of Wisconsin State
Parks Banquet last Friday. This statewide recognition of your efforts is
a testament to the wonderful people we have in this group. Your efforts
continue to provide for the interpretive needs of Wyalusing State Park.
This is however, no time to rest on our laurels. Times are tough for
park resources now and for the immediate future . Your help is still
much needed and appreciated. Together with the park staff, we can make
Wyalusing even better. The true reward for our efforts is the knowledge
that we ARE making a difference.

In addition, Wyalusing was voted best water trail and Randy Paske's
photo of the Knob shelter was chosen to grace the 2011 state friends
calendar. As you can see, we have a lot to be thankful for. The next
regular meeting is Monday, November 8th at the park Visitor Center. I
hope to see you there.

Wyalusing State Park has won the 2010 Gold Seal Award for the Best Water Trail --and-- the Hero Award for Successful Friends Group!

I know that this message comes with short notice but we hope that you will join us for the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, October 22, 2010. Dinner will be served at 6pm and the awards will start at 7pm. All Friends members and Park staff who would like to attend are invited. Canoes ready to go!

The water is going DOWN - S-L-O-W-L-Y. It's been about ten days since the recent rains 'up north' traveled downstream and, in turn, created flooding along this section of the Mississippi River and its backwaters. The photo on the left was taken at the River's crest. Everyone who has been to the boat landing at Wyalusing State Park will recognize this sign Almost everyone has had a photograph taken below the sign

In preparation for the high water, the boat dock was moved to higher ground. Twelve canoes, located on the lower two sections of the rack, were trailered to a safer area.

Campers who wished to experience the canoe trail have not been able to rent canoes.

Ten days later, the water has receded. In preparation for this weekend, Columbus Day weekend, eight of the canoes will be returned to the storage rack at the boat landing. A total of twelve canoes will be available for the weekend.. The bottom six canoes will remain on higher ground. In addition to the twelve canoes, four single person kayaks will be available for rent at the Friends of Wyalusing Concession Stand.

Water levels will remain higher than normal during the weekend. At this point, it is unknown if all of the canoe trail makers have remained in place. It is quite possible that a few trees on which the canoe trail signs were posted have fallen. In addition, the actual trail may have been changed because fallen trees may have fallen across the trail. Use caution. Wear the personal flotation device. Paddle safely. Dear Friends,

We have just completed another great spirits night. The season and the FOWSP fiscal year are drawing to a close and I wanted to take this time to thank all of you for your continued efforts on behalf of the FOWSP and Wyalusing State Park. As an organization we have managed to accomplish some great things for the park this year even during tough economic times. While nobody knows what the next year might bring, with people like you supporting it, Wyalusing State Park will continue to be a favorite destination for visitors.

October brings our fiscal year to a close. While, with your help, we continue to provide support for the park, there is so much more we can do together. I encourage all of you to consider the Friends of Wyalusing State Park Endowment Fund in your year end charitable donations. The Friends of Wyalusing State Park is a registered charitable organization, as such your donation may be tax deductible. See the web site at www.wyalusing.org or the blog at, friendsofwyalusingstatepark.blogspot.com on how to donate. Check with your employer as they may have matching funds available.

If you are looking to get more personally involved with the group, now is the time. Officer and board of director elections are coming up shortly for 2011. Spirits of Wyalusing Past - 2010*

The Friends of Wyalusing State Park invites the public on Saturday evening, September 25, 2010, for an adventure into history. The Spirits of Wyalusing Past is an annual event sponsored by the Friends of Wyalusing. It begins at 7:00 PM in the Peterson Shelter. The event is free, however any vehicle entering the park will need a Wisconsin State Parks sticker. Stickers can be purchased at the park Visitor Center the day of the event.

A silent auction featuring quality hand-made items will also be held during the event. Included are one-of-a-kind, hand-made quilt with photos from Wyalusing State Park, bird houses, camping items, and a framed nature photograph from a local photographer.

Wisconsin Park Volunteers Enjoy Wyalusing State Park

The announcement that Wyalusing State Park will be the host park for the Wisconsin State Park Volunteer Jamboree in 2010 was welcomed as another 'can do' challenge by The Friends of Wyalusing and the Wyalusing State Park staff.

The southwest area of Wisconsin has so much to offer, from its interesting history, the marvelous scenery and the local cuisine to the talented and friendly residents. Wyalusing State Park has the one of a kind Hugh Harper Indoor Group Camp in the state park system. The planning committee's goal was to showcase all of these attributes for the participants of the Jamboree.

The Wisconsin State Volunteer Jamboree occurs every fall. The Wisconsin State Park System sponsors a Volunteer Jamboree for all volunteers, campgrounds hosts and friends who have volunteered their time at Wisconsin's state parks, forests and trails during the past season. The Jamboree was held September 12-14, 2010. Nearly 100 participants took part in this year's event.

Peter Biermeier, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Parks and staff provided the volunteers with a listening session, introductions of all the attendees, and acted as master of ceremonies.

The program of activities included: a campfire sing-a-long led by Mike McCoy, the Birds of Wyalusing State Park narrated by Chris West, Mississippi River boat tours provided by Mississippi River Explorer, narrated by Michael Douglas and Chris West, a delicious catfish dinner prepared by Gary Stram and his wife, stories around the campfire with story teller Faye Stone, and an evening of stars presented by the Wyalusing State Park Star-Splitters.

Monday's lunch was provided by Ma's Bakery of Bloomington, WI. Items and coupons from Shihata's Orchard, Culvers, 3M and The Prairie du Chien Chamber of Commerce filled tote bags provided by The Friends of Wisconsin State Parks.

The Friends of Wyalusing as well as Wyalusing State Park staff assisted in the planning and execution of the two day jamboree.

The Friends of Wyalusing invite everyone to the next event: Spirits of Wyalusing Past held September 25, 2010 at the Peterson Shelter. Events begin at 7:00 PM. Park vehicle admission sticker is required.

Great pictures and a great time Kathy. I already have them on our Facebook page. You guys did the best job we have seen at a guest host gathering. We are so proud to be a part of Wyalusing. Didn't hear one negative word, and nothing but compliments.

A big "thanks" to you, your staff, the volunteers, and the Friends of your beautiful Park.

This was the first Jamboree that my wife and I have attended and can`t tell you how much we enjoyed the days and nites with all the volunteers.

The food was terrific, the star gazing was fantastic, the campfire programs were very soothing and the trips that were planned at the River and in the Villa are not soon to be forgotten.

Thanks again to you and all the volunteers that made this possible and please pass our appreciation onto them.

I hope you have had a chance to recover from your busy schedule with the Volunteer Jamboree. I want to thank you for taking the lead on this event and making it such a great success. It was obvious that you had put in many hours in preparation, planning and coordination to pull this event off. You and all of the park staff and volunteers deserve a huge "thanks" from the parks program for your work. I really enjoyed spending the day with the group and hearing there concerns as well as there successes. I have already heard back from a few managers who had volunteers at the event and they had nothing but great things to report! Nice work, I really appreciate your efforts.
